Cookie Decorating Class, February 2014

Beginner's Cookie Decorating with Royal Icing Class in Frederick, Maryland

My next cookie class is scheduled for February 6th, 2014 from 6:30 - 9:30 pm.

We'll be decorating Valentine cookies.

I'll demonstrate different ways to decorate a single shape.  If you look at the photo above, you'll see that the two flowers are decorated differently, the two cupcakes, the two lips.....

There's no one right way to decorate a cookie!

You'll learn the difference between wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry decorating.

It's going to be fun!

Come learn with me.  There are only two spots left!  You can sign up here.

Here are a few photos from my last class in December......

Panda Bear Cookies

Chocolate and Vanilla Panda Bear Sugar Cookies

Little cuties, huh?  I've been admiring all of the adorable Japanese cookie cutters that I've seen online.  Just before Christmas, my husband bought a set for me!

For each panda shape there are multiple pieces and one for impressing the face.

It's hard to tell here but the vanilla pieces are layered on top of the chocolate bases.  My original plan was to make each panda only one layer, cutting spaces in the chocolate to drop in the vanilla.  That sure didn't work.  The pieces were just too small.

No royal icing in sight but the next time I use these, I plan on cutting out the bases and using the other cutters to make impressions.  Then decorate with royal icing as usual.

I've added that to the mighty long list of cookies I want to make.  Someday maybe I'll actually get to it!

Hungry Caterpillar Cookies

Sugar Cookies Decorated with Royal Icing - a Hungry Caterpillar

Oh, what can I say about these?  That they nearly killed me?  I guess that would be over-stating it.  I did have to make the caterpillars twice.

The caterpillars are royal icing transfers.  The first time that I made them, they completely broke apart.  Thankfully I had success with the second go-round.

I do love the way they turned out, so the pain was well worth it!

Washington, DC Wedding Cookies

Sugar Cookies decorated with royal icing - perfect for a wedding in Washington, DC.

Finally!  I've been wanting to decorate Washington, DC themed cookies for a long time.  I was scared.  I was intimidated.  I didn't know if I could pull it off.  I got another request for them, so it was time.  I had to do a test run before accepting the order.  I think I pulled it off!

The panda bears are the main attraction at the National Zoo.  I grew up with Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing.  They were DC celebrities.  Anyone else remember them?

I even did my senior project in high school at the Zoo.  The graphics department.  Thankfully not the animal clean up crew.  The only thing that I remember doing is drawing faces of animals that were to be used as a reference for face painting at the zoo.

Oh, and one other memory - Alicia (the other high schooler) having a beer when we went out to lunch!  A beer!  At lunch!  While we were working! Alicia was 18, the legal drinking age in DC way back then.  I guess I still haven't gotten over the shock of that, huh?

So here's sweet Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing in cookie form........

Is there anything more beautiful than cherry blossoms in DC?  I think not.

I made cherry blossom trees and flowers in cookie form.

Notice anything wrong with the trees?  The flowers on the trees have six petals!  What was I thinking?  I guess I wasn't.  They should only have five petals.  I'll try to remember to get that right next time!

Onto the Washington buildings and monuments.  This is what terrified me.  I wasn't able to get the cutters so had to try to create them on fancy rectangles.  The shapes of the buildings.  The details.  All of those lines that need to be semi-precise.  Yikes.

We have the Capitol dome, White House, Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial and Lincoln Memorial.

I added some snowy skies on two of them.  Perfect for a winter DC event, right?

Cloudy and clear skies too.  Perfect for spring or summer.

I had intended to add some branches with fall leaves peeking in from the sides to represent the season of fall.  I quickly nixed that idea as I was decorating.  Not enough room.  It probably would have turned out awfully and ruined all of that work.  Sorry fall!

These Washington, DC themed cookies are available for purchase on my website.

Thanks for looking!

Little Lamb Cookies with Royal Icing

These sweet little lamb sugar cookies were made for a baby shower.

They ended up looking very cute but I was pretty worried while decorating.  The dreaded craters appeared on many of the spots.  I added tiny dots on top to help camouflage the craters.  Thankfully it worked out just fine!
