I can design a website for your cookie business!
For a few years now - I've been holding cookie decorating classes and consultations with people that are ready to start a cookie business. For several of them one HUGE thing was holding them back....
The online stuff.
They have no idea where to start to build a website. They have no confidence that they would be able to figure it out.
In this day, every business NEEDS an online presence. A website and social media are key in a business' success.
I am now offering to build a website for new cookie businesses. Web designers charge thousands of dollars to create a website. Not only am I doing it for much less, I KNOW the cookie business. I know how the site should work - what you need and what you don't.
I'll send you a questionnaire to get started so that I can learn all about you and your expectations for a website. Then I'll get to work on your site. Once I have the basics up, we'll have a two-hour video conference where I'll show you how to make future edits on your site.
You can do it! I'll get you started then teach you how to keep it going.
More info on my website.

Live Online Classes - Cookies as Business
Well hello! It's been . . . years? . . . since my last post. I'm still here making cookies for special occasions, and hosting cookie decorating parties and classes.
I'm dusting off the old blog to tell you that I've started something new! I'm now offering live, online classes on Cookies as Business.
There are tons of videos and tutorials online and plenty of real-life classes about how to decorate cookies. There aren't a lot of resources on the business side. That's where I come in!
I taught on this subject at Cookie Con 2015. Now I've expanded it into several topics so that we can get into the details. Because the classes are held online, you can join me from anywhere!
I've had a successful cookie business since 2013. I’ve learned a lot since starting my business. I’ve changed a lot of things too. I’m ready to share my years of experience with you. I’m here to teach and encourage you to get you started and to help your business grow!
You can join me online LIVE (not recorded!) at the bakery. I'll talk to you about a variety of topics.
Business 101 covers how to get started in your cookie business with a commercial kitchen if necessary, what you need to ask your bank and accountant, policies for your website to get you going on the right foot, advice on choosing a business name, and ideas on what items and services you can offer.
Taking and Completing Orders will teach you my method step-by-step so that you never forget an order or leave out a detail when it's time to decorate. Everything will be in one spot to look over and refer to at any time. I'll send you the two forms that I use for order-taking.
Those are just TWO of the classes I'm offering. Here is the full list for February and March 2018.
* Business 101 - Monday, Feb 19th, 7 - 8:30 pm
* How to Take and Complete Orders - Tuesday, Feb 20th, 7 - 8:30 pm

Cookie Order Forms
Hi all! I'm back from #CookieCon2015 ! What an amazing time, filled with cookies and friends!
It was amazing to meet so many people and talk to them about their businesses. I hope that I was able to offer some helpful advice.
I talked about how I organize taking orders. My binder and forms are integral!
I use one form to list all of the details of an order. That form goes into my binder, in chronological order. I refer back to it while decorating.
I have another form that simply lists the cookie shapes and quantity for every order. I make my way through these forms every time I make dough.
Would you like to learn more and receive copies of the forms that I use?
I'm now offering Online Live Video Classes! I have one on this very subject. Check it out and join me!

Favor Bags for Cookies
Where to buy and what size favor bags do you need for cookies?
I've been asked this question many times, so thought I'd share.
I purchase my favor bags at Gifts International. The prices are great, but the shipping is a bit high so order a lot at a time!
My bags are organized in plastic shoe bins, by size.
Some of my bagged cookies.....
I WISH that I could purchase 4" x 8" bags! The 4" x 6" are often too short so I have to move up to a 5" wide bag. I really want 4x8ers!
If you know of somewhere to purchase bags of that size, please let me know in the comments!
Questions for you: Let me know in the comments.
Where do you purchase your favor bags?
What are your favorite sizes?
I'm now offering Online Live Video Classes! Would you like to know the sizes of favor bags that I purchase and use most often? Would you like to know how I bag my cookies for local pick up and for shipping? I have a class on this very subject. Check it out and join me!

Watch out for scam emails!
Scam Email Alert
I get scam emails from time to time (in my spam folder) and hear about them frequently. I've always thought I'd never fall for one, or even come close. I thought I could spot them a mile away.
I received an email recently that had me puzzled. I thought it was odd. Here it is.....
Hello,
I want to place an order from you to our store in The Netherlands. I want to know if you can ship here and accept MASTER OR VISA CREDIT CARD as a form of payment. Reply back asap.
Thanks
Weird, huh? I decided to reply even though I thought it a bad idea to ship cookies to the Netherlands for resale. Perhaps I'd get more details in the next email. I was curious. Here is that email....
Subject Line: MY ORDER LIST::: AWAIT YOUR RESPONSE WITH THE TOTAL COST SOONER.
Hello,
Thanks for your reply back. Its a pleasure receiving your reply back. I want to order for the below items for my customer's here, I want you to reply back with the total cost plus shipping quote. We're ready and can't wait to receive these wonderful products if yours here.
Your utmost reply back with the total quote will be highly appreciated.
Large Cookie Favors
QTY..................... 80
Cookie Toppers
QTY..................... 80
Large Cookie Platters
QTY..................... 80
...ADDRESS FOR THE SHIPPING QUOTE........
Hoofdstraat 90A,
8162 AD,
Epe,
The Netherlands.
Hope to read back from you with the total cost and we can proceed and finalized my order.
God bless you,
Jacob.
My thoughts after this email.......
This is definitely not right!
If you'd like to resell my cookies, why aren't you asking if I sell wholesale?
How fresh would these cookies be for your customers?
You want "large favors", "cookie toppers" and "platters"? Huh? Nothing specific?
Send you a price on this request? Really? How would I do that?
Weird just got weirder.
I let this email sit in my inbox for a few days. There's no way that I was going to try to fill this order, but I wasn't sure that it was a true scam. I mentioned it to my friend Meghan and she told me to google the entire email that I received from "Jacob". What good advice!
I found it verbatim in the first entire page of google results. These had different mailing addresses and signed by different names, but the exact same email.
Apparently the next email from "Jacob" will be to ask me to use his shipper. Then give me one or two credit cards to charge. Then ask me to send the shipping amount directly to the shipper. Or something like this. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. What does make sense is that he'll be using a stolen credit card. The charge will be reversed. He'll have his money and I'll be out my merchandise and the money.
Oh, and the type of merchandise you sell doesn't matter at all. It's not just cookies. It's anything. Anyone that will fall for it.
So do I send another reply? Tell him that he's a dirtbag thief? Play along with him for a while, just to waste his time? (That's what my son wanted to do!)
I just deleted the emails. I won't let him waste MY time.
My advice to you is the same that Meghan gave me.....If you receive an email that raises red flags - google it. If you find it - case closed. If you don't find it, talk to someone about it before doing anything. If you're at all unsure - pass on the deal. Just don't do it.
Question for you: Have you received this same scam email? Or another one? Let us know in the comments. It could help someone else to avoid falling victim to a scam.

Tutorial - How to Bake and Store Undecorated Cookies
Would you like to see what I do with sugar cookies once they're out of the oven and until it's time to decorate?
I'm often asked how I store cookies waiting to be decorated. How far in advance do I bake?
How do I get ready to work on an order?

Interview with Sweet Naomi Cookies on Cookies as Business
Cookiepreneur Interview with Amanda from Sweet Naomis Cookies
How many ways can you have a cookie business? Let us count them! Here's the third installment of Cookiepreneur Interviews. Let's hear about Amanda's cookie business!
*******************************************
How long have you been in
business? Is it part-time or full-time?
Unofficially started in 2013 and
finally got all my paperwork in order to be 'legit' in 2014. Technically,
I'm part-time but it really depends on the week/season. :) I
suppose the best answer to this is that I try to be part-time.
Tell us about the Health Department
laws in your area? Do you have to use a commercial kitchen or is there a
Cottage Food law?
For sugar cookies, a state inspected
kitchen is required or you can operate under the Cottage Food laws (with
restrictions). That is my understanding anyway! I use my home
kitchen which is state inspected.
If you use your home kitchen, please
tell us about that. What did you need to do to get it approved? How
do you manage your kitchen when it involves both business and family?
I use my home kitchen and getting it approved involved
getting a zoning permit from my county then getting an inspection from the VA
Dept of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
How I manage our kitchen for both
the business and family....hmm, is that a trick question? ;)
Honestly, there's no good answer to this. Just really late nights
and lots of coffee.
Do you ship cookies? If so,
please tell us about that.
Yes! I started selling on
Etsy, so I started out shipping most of my orders. Only once I started
getting more local orders did I realize how much more work shipping entails
(because decorated cookies aren't labor intensive enough....ha)! We've
tried different ways of shipping and found that using copious amounts of bubble
wrap and shipping them upright (not flat) works best. I don't always do
that though as I've found that it sometimes depends on the cookie shape and
amount I'm shipping.
Does your business include anything else other than taking custom decorated cookie orders?
Just decorated cookies for us, for
now.
What is your most enjoyable business
task?
Decorating!
Does anyone help you with your
cookie business or are you a one-woman-show?
I definitely have help, I couldn't
possibly do it myself. My husband does deliveries and helps make the
dough and baking and my oldest son helps with packaging.
If you could delegate one task, what
would it be?
Clean up! I didn't even have
to think about that one... :)
Best tip for those starting their
cookie business?
Make sure your business works for
you and not against you. If you do quality work, you will get busy fast
so don't be afraid to invest in whatever will make the business more efficient.
How did you get the word out about
your business in the beginning? How do you do it now?
Honestly, I've never done much with
marketing. Starting on Etsy helped me get initial orders in but after
about a year I took my listings down as now most of my orders are local through
my website, referrals, and repeat customers.
Have you raised your prices since
beginning?
Yes. And this is an area that
I'm still adjusting to see what works best.
Any tips for efficiency – in making
dough, decorating, shipping, invoicing….anything!
I don't, actually. I wish I
did, I could use it! My best tip for efficiency is to keep your inner
perfectionist to a bare minimum. Remember that most (not all!) customers
aren't going to scrutinize and judge the cookies the way you do.
Do you have minimums on number of
cookies per order, number of designs, number of icing colors?
Yes, sort of, and yes! 12
cookies is my minimum, I don't mind different designs so long as they use the
same colors, and I try to keep it at 2 colors (plus white) per dozen. If
I get an inquiry for something that I know will be a lot of colors, I'll either
up the minimum cookie order or charge extra.
What are your cookie dreams?
If you could, would you hire employees, buy a larger mixer, move into a larger
space, etc?
My cookie dream is to decorate
cookies in a super cute, sunny kitchen with cookies already baked, icing
bagged/bottled in perfect consistencies (and they never separate!!), they
magically bag and ship themselves, and my kids clean up the mess. It's
nice to cookie dream. :)
********************************************
Thanks so much for sharing Amanda! I hope this post has encouraged you or given you some new things to think about regarding your business or soon-to-be-business!

Tutorial - How to Ship Sugar Cookies
Tutorial - How to Pack Cookies for Shipping
Shipping sugar cookies is possible when they're packed well! I was terrified of shipping and resisted for quite some time. To expand my business, I finally decided to give it a try.
Thankfully I have two cookie friends, Amy and Cindy, that answered my questions and encouraged me!
*knock on wood* I've had great success with cookies arriving to my customers intact.
I'm now offering Online Live Video Classes! Would you like to learn how I bag my cookies for shipping? How I fill the bakery boxes then the shipping boxes? The supplies I use? I have an online class on this very subject! Check it out and join me!

Tutorial - How to Package Sugar Cookies for Shipping
How to Bag Sugar Cookies for Shipping
All of my cookies from orders are either bagged (for shipping or local pick up) or placed on a platter (for pick up).
All of my bagged cookies are heat-sealed
I use a 12" Impulse Heat Sealer with cutter.
Would you like to learn how I bag my cookies for shipping?
I NEVER tie the ribbon prior to shipping!
I'm now offering Online Live Video Classes! I'll explain exactly how I bag my cookies for shipping - and tell you why I don't tie the bags. (Not tying bags was a huge game changer for me!)
Check it out my online class and join me!

Tutorial - How to Cut Ribbon Quickly and Package Sugar Cookie Favors
How To Cut Ribbon Quickly
How to Package Sugar Cookie Favors for Local Pick Up/Delivery
One day, I finally got smart about it. It now takes less than a minute to cut that much ribbon.
I bag my cookies, heat-seal them, then tie ribbon.
If the cookies are for local pick up (or if you deliver) , place the favors into a 10" x 10" cake box from BRP Box Shop. Their boxes are really nice and sturdy.
If the cookies are to be shipped, I bag them differently. More info here.

Sugar Dot Cookies in the Press
My 5 minutes of fame? I've had the honor of being featured in a few local newspapers and magazines this year.........
Here's another reason to be sure that your cookie business is legal. If you're approached by someone in the media, would you have to turn down the honor of a feature?
